Turkey Steps In to Mediate Somali Government and Opposition Talks

Mogadishu: Turkey announced its active role in launching and sustaining the dialogue process between the Somali government and opposition, amidst ongoing discussions regarding the constitution and electoral system. The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has been conducting intensive consultations with various political parties in Somalia.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted a source within the MIT as saying that the agency spearheaded an initiative to bridge the gap between the government and its opponents through a meeting held in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The meeting aimed to address the core disagreements surrounding attempts to amend the constitution and electoral system.

The security source indicated that, in light of the Turkish initiative, the Somali Federal Government and opposition representatives continued their talks. The process is progressing through close coordination between the MIT and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under th
e guidance of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Efforts are underway to address and resolve the differences between the Somali parties through constructive dialogue.

Throughout the various stages of the process, Turkey has emphasized to all parties that achieving lasting peace and stability in Somalia can only be accomplished through dialogue, consensus, and a comprehensive political process. Turkey stressed that the country’s future can only be built by the will of the Somali people themselves. The sources added that Turkey, as a true friend and strategic partner of Somalia, will continue to contribute to supporting peace, stability, and development in the country.

For its part, the Somali government, in a statement, expressed its gratitude to Turkey for its positive role in facilitating dialogue, noting that representatives of the government and the opposition held a meeting in Mogadishu in a friendly atmosphere.

Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who participated in the talks repre
senting a segment of the opposition, stated that the parties agreed during the Mogadishu meeting to continue the comprehensive dialogue process in a way that serves political stability, security, and prosperity in Somalia.

The security source indicated that the Somali parties, in their recent meeting, which included the participation of the Turkish intelligence service, exchanged views in an open, honest, and constructive manner, expressing their gratitude to Turkey for the positive and dedicated role it has played throughout the dialogue process.
