Rustenburg: Fourteen miners were killed and eight others seriously injured in a rockslide at an abandoned gold mine near Rustenburg, South Africa. Police reported that the accident occurred approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, provincial police spokeswoman Adele Mayburg stated that no information was yet available regarding the identities or nationalities of the miners. Mayburg highlighted that the mine where the accident occurred was “unsafe in every sense of the word,” emphasizing the hazardous conditions of such abandoned sites.

Thousands of illegal miners in South Africa operate in abandoned mines, searching for gold and other minerals. These sites often lack safety measures and infrastructure, exposing workers to extremely dangerous conditions.
