Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi emphasized the significance of sustained cooperation and coordination with the United Nations, highlighting the benefits of leveraging its expertise and programs to bolster Iraq’s reform and development initiatives. This collaboration aims to enhance economic and social stability while solidifying Iraq’s regional and international role.
According to Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s Media Office released a statement detailing al-Zaidi’s meeting with the Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Peter Hawkins. The discussions centered around strengthening the partnership between Iraq and the United Nations, particularly in development and economic domains, aligning with the Iraqi government’s priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The meeting also explored UN efforts to support Iraq’s development and reform programs, emphasizing the importance of strengthening institutions and expanding areas of technical and advisory cooperation. Al-Zaidi highlighted the government’s focus on rural development, agricultural sector support, and private sector enhancement as key elements of the economic reform plans aimed at achieving sustainable development and economic diversification.
Al-Zaidi further noted the government’s initiative to establish a development fund, which is expected to finance projects in the agricultural sector, establish industrial cities, and advance projects in the health and education sectors. These endeavors, primarily driven by the private sector, are projected to contribute to development and create more job opportunities.
Hawkins reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the Iraqi government’s efforts in economic reforms, private sector development, and strengthening development pathways to achieve Iraq’s development objectives.
