Baghdad:Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi has announced significant economic reforms, including the allocation of recovered anti-corruption funds to the Future Generations Fund, alongside efforts to ensure all weapons are brought under state control and the return of Iraq’s national maritime carrier after more than fifty years.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Zaidi emphasized that five armed factions have agreed to hand over their weapons to the state, with three already taking steps to do so. He highlighted the importance of preventing further bloodshed as a national responsibility and reiterated the need to strengthen state authority and maintain Iraq’s decision-making independence.
Efforts are underway to resolve issues with Turkey and Kuwait and protect Iraq from regional conflicts. The government aims to increase oil production to 10 million barrels per day by 2031 and has launched the Future Generations Fund with an initial 1.5 trillion Iraqi dinars. Additionally, 500 billion dinars will be allocated monthly to settle farmers’ outstanding payments, and initiatives are in place to complete a one-million-housing-plot project and develop new cities across provinces.
In foreign relations, Al-Zaidi reported progress in negotiations with Turkey for the withdrawal of its forces and ongoing talks with Kuwait to address unresolved issues. The government continues to prioritize Iraq’s stability and protection from regional conflicts.
Al-Zaman highlighted the return of Iraq’s national maritime carrier to Gulf trade routes. The first voyage from Jebel Ali Port in the UAE to Umm Qasr Port is scheduled for October 15. This move aims to enhance container and goods movement through Iraqi ports, support regional trade, and expand the national carrier’s presence in shipping routes, marking a revival in Iraq’s maritime transport sector since the mid-1960s.
