Al-Halbousi Declares Iraq Will Not Strain Ties with Arab Neighbors Over Iran

Baghdad: Speaker of Parliament Haibat al-Halbousi announced on Tuesday that Iraq will not engage in tensions with the Arab world for the sake of Iran. In a press statement, al-Halbousi emphasized the importance of maintaining amicable relations with neighboring Arab countries and condemned any Iranian attacks on Arab states.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Halbousi clarified that lifting the immunity of MPs under investigation does not imply their guilt. The judiciary remains the ultimate authority in confirming or denying corruption charges. He highlighted the sensitivity of recent operations against corruption, stating that arrests were conducted smoothly without any clashes between the raiding forces and the security details of the accused MPs.

Al-Halbousi described "Operation Dawn" as the largest anti-corruption initiative since 2003, with involved MPs set to face the judiciary. He reiterated that no one is immune from the law and that legal procedures will be enforced uniformly. Furthermore, he stressed Iraq's opposition to using its territory for attacks on neighboring countries and confirmed an agreement with political blocs to limit weapons control to the state by September 30th. The Prime Minister, backed with full authority, is tasked with preventing any attacks from Iraqi territory.

The Speaker underscored discussions with the Iranian Foreign Minister about the redundancy of armed factions in Iraq, prioritizing national sovereignty and shared interests with both America and Iran. He affirmed the legitimacy of controlling weapons and pledged support to the Prime Minister against factions refusing to disarm, aiming to dismantle their economic influence. Al-Halbousi concluded by stating that al-Zaydi would take necessary actions against non-compliant factions.
