Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has directed the development of a comprehensive mechanism to organize the Arba’een pilgrimage, focusing on transportation and the return movement of pilgrims.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office indicated that Al-Zaidi chaired an expanded meeting of the Services Committee for the Million-Person Pilgrimages on Tuesday. The meeting reviewed service preparations for commemorating the Arba’een of Imam Hussein and his companions, an event that draws millions of pilgrims from inside and outside Iraq to the holy city of Karbala.
Al-Zaidi highlighted the necessity for this year’s pilgrimage to be distinct from previous years in terms of service provision and ensuring the smooth movement of pilgrims. He emphasized the importance of assessing the ground situation to identify necessary requirements and demonstrating the authority of the state, which he believes will reflect governmental success and bolster citizens’ confidence in its performance.
The Prime Minister instructed the development of a detailed plan to manage the Arba’een pilgrimage, particularly concerning transportation and pilgrims’ return journeys. This includes ensuring a sufficient number of vehicles in coordination with ministries, agencies, and local governments in the provinces. He also stressed the need to provide essential services for the Husseini processions, such as electricity, fuel, medical services, and adequate communications and media coverage.
Additionally, Al-Zaidi directed that border crossings be organized to facilitate the entry of Arab and foreign pilgrims into Iraq, highlighting the government’s efforts to enhance the country’s positive image.
