Damascus: French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France is contemplating the deployment of special forces to Syria as part of a strategic effort to combat terrorism and enhance military cooperation between the two nations. During a joint press conference with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus, Macron expressed France’s commitment to tackling terrorism in the region. He stated, “France remains committed to combating terrorism in the region, and therefore, we are prepared, within a framework we are currently restructuring, to provide support in the fight against terrorism and terrorist groups through our special forces.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Macron’s announcement comes amidst ongoing discussions to restructure the security and military collaboration with Syria. The French President also highlighted the possibility of forming partnerships to equip and diversify the capabilities of the Syrian armed forces.
The announcement follows a tense situation in Damascus, where two explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel earlier this week. Macron had stayed at the hotel the previous night and attended a breakfast dinner there. The first explosion was reportedly caused by a car bomb, and the second by an improvised explosive device hidden inside a medium-sized garbage container. Despite the security concerns, Macron continues to emphasize France’s dedication to supporting Syria in its fight against terrorism.
