Baghdad: In a statement, the House of Wisdom said: “The Department of Historical Studies at the House of Wisdom held a meeting, chaired by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Naeem Al-Aboudi, which included the team tasked with translating and reviewing the encyclopedia ‘Iraq in British Documents 1914-1966.’ The meeting was also attended by the Secretary-General, Haider Qasim Matar Al-Tamimi, Head of the Department of Historical Studies. This meeting was part of the House of Wisdom’s plan to revive the translation project of the encyclopedia and complete its remaining parts, highlighting the philosophical and intellectual foundation upon which the institution is building this major intellectual project, aiming to create a lasting documentary reference that will serve researchers and the National Library.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting addressed the importance of the Encyclopedia of Iraq in British Documents as a scientific and historical reference encyclopedia that has worked to document national memory and enhance historical research, and the necessity of translating it due to the documents it contains covering important periods in Iraq’s history during the twentieth century.
The participants also discussed the executive frameworks and adopted procedural controls, the mechanism for adhering to textual fidelity, and the critical review of footnotes and endnotes to address terminology and ideological biases in colonial documents.
They reviewed the timelines for translation, scientific and linguistic review, and final production, ensuring the encyclopedia’s completion according to a rigorous scientific methodology and its timely availability to researchers and those interested in Iraqi history.
This meeting reaffirms the commitment to continuing work and completing the project’s phases according to the established standards, reflecting the House of Wisdom’s dedication to activating scientific and historical projects and enhancing the role of Iraqi academic and translation expertise in documenting Iraq’s history and preserving its national memory.
