Iraq and Italy Explore Enhanced Cooperation in Antiquities and Cultural Heritage

Baghdad: Iraq and Italy have embarked on discussions aimed at strengthening joint cooperation in the fields of antiquities and cultural heritage. The dialogue, held between the head of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, Ali Obeid Shalgham, and the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, Nicol² Fontana, seeks to bolster cultural relations and elevate the presence of Iraqi heritage on the global stage.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Shalgham highlighted the active involvement of over 25 Italian archaeological missions in Iraq, dedicated to surveying, excavation, and restoring archaeological sites. He underscored the significance of presenting their findings at international exhibitions and forums, which would reflect the depth of cultural collaboration between Iraq and Italy.

The Italian Ambassador reiterated Italy’s ongoing support for Iraq’s initiatives to safeguard and maintain its cultural heritage. He mentioned the forthcoming inauguration of the Sumerian Hall in the Iraqi Museum and an anticipated visit by the director of an Italian museum to foster cooperation and exchange expertise.

In addition, an international cultural exhibition organized by the Milan Association, featuring participation from several top-tier museums worldwide, was announced. The ambassador extended an official invitation to Iraq, offering a platform to showcase its rich cultural heritage to an international audience.

Shalgham noted that the Iraqi government’s agenda prioritizes the exhibition of the nation’s civilization and the revitalization of tourism and cultural activities through expanded international partnerships. He stated that the commission would proceed with the necessary legal steps for participation in the exhibition upon receiving the official invitation.
