PM Al-Sudani Urges Global Action on ISIS Detainees in Call with Macron

Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani underscored the critical need for international responsibility in handling ISIS detainees during a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. He emphasized that countries, particularly those in the European Union, should take custody of ISIS members who hold their nationalities to ensure they face trial and receive just punishment.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani highlighted the transfer of several foreign ISIS members from Syrian Democratic Forces prisons to Iraqi custody as a temporary measure. He expressed gratitude for France’s contributions to the international coalition against ISIS and stressed the importance of ongoing bilateral cooperation in security, defense, and enhancing the combat capabilities of the Iraqi armed forces.

President Macron, in response, congratulated Iraq on its successful parliamentary elections and commended Iraq’s role in managing regional crises. He acknowledged the stabilizing influence of al-Sudani’s government and its support for sustainable solutions. Macron affirmed France’s commitment to providing technical and financial assistance to address the situation of imprisoned ISIS members.
