PM to Lead High-Level Delegation to Washington for Economic Talks and Agreements

Baghdad: Government spokesperson Haider Al-Aboudi confirmed on Sunday that Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi will travel to the U.S. capital, Washington, on Monday at the head of a high-level delegation. He noted that the prime minister is scheduled to hold key meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, senior officials, and representatives of economic and financial institutions.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Al-Aboudi stated at a press conference that the visit underscores Iraq's commitment to fostering balanced foreign relations rooted in mutual interests. The trip holds particular significance due to the current regional context, with plans to sign memoranda of understanding in the oil and gas sectors. These agreements aim to boost production capacity and explore alternative export routes to mitigate the impact of the Strait of Hormuz.

Al-Aboudi emphasized the goal of strengthening ties with Washington, with discussions centered on expanding economic and investment cooperation. He highlighted that this visit is distinct in its focus on economic issues, with no anticipated modifications to the Strategic Framework Agreement. All agreements made will adhere to its existing provisions.

Completing the government cabinet remains tied to political consensus, and the delegation plans to address remaining vacancies during discussions. Al-Aboudi reiterated plans to bring U.S. oil companies into Iraq, aiming to enhance production capacity and regional engagement. Economic, investment, and development cooperation will be prioritized, promoting Iraq's investment environment in energy, trade, and technology sectors.

Prime Minister Al-Zaidi is expected to hold significant meetings with President Trump and senior U.S. officials, with a focus on advancing bilateral dialogue and cooperation. Discussions will revolve around economic issues, with several memoranda to be implemented under the Iraqi-American Fund for Development and Energy.

Al-Aboudi expressed optimism about evolving Iraq's relationship with the United States into a long-term economic partnership, with talks also covering equipping and enhancing Iraq's security forces. The government's decision to restrict weapons to state control is aimed at ensuring a stable investment environment and maintaining internal security.
