Baghdad: The Presidency of the Republic has announced that it has filed a lawsuit before the Federal Court against Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. The lawsuit concerns the issue of the salaries of employees in the Kurdistan Region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hawri Tawfiq, the Director General of the Department of International Relations and Organizations, stated during a press conference that the lawsuit was filed based on a recommendation from the legal representative. This action aims to defend the salaries of employees in the region. The lawsuit was officially registered on January 20, but its announcement was delayed due to ongoing teachers’ strikes and deteriorating health conditions among them, as well as protests and boycotts of studies in certain areas.

Tawfiq further announced that the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid, has taken legal action by registering this lawsuit in the Federal Court. The lawsuit targets not only the Prime Minister but also the Minister of Finance. It requests the Federal Court to issue an urgent order ensuring that the salaries in the Kurdistan Region are paid continuously and without interruption.

The lawsuit also demands that technical procedures such as balance review, auditing, and control should not delay the payment of salaries. Additionally, it includes a request for the House of Representatives to amend paragraph (c) of Article 12 of the Budget Law, which relates to the cost of producing a barrel of oil in the region. Fortunately, this amendment was recently made by the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
