Baghdad: Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and coordination with the United Nations during a meeting with Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Iraq, Peter Hawkins, on Tuesday.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister’s Media Office released a statement highlighting the discussions between al-Zaidi and Hawkins. The meeting focused on enhancing the partnership between Iraq and the United Nations in development and economic fields, aligning with the Iraqi government’s priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals. They also deliberated on UN efforts to support development and reform programs, strengthening institutions, and advancing technical and advisory cooperation.
Prime Minister al-Zaidi outlined the government’s economic reform plans, which include rural development, agricultural sector support, and private sector enhancement. These initiatives aim to achieve sustainable development and economic diversification. He mentioned the establishment of a development fund to finance projects in agriculture, industrial cities, health, and education, which will be executed by the private sector. Al-Zaidi emphasized that these projects would contribute to development and generate job opportunities.
Al-Zaidi reiterated the importance of continued UN cooperation, leveraging its expertise to support reform and development processes, thereby enhancing economic and social stability and consolidating Iraq’s regional and international role.
Peter Hawkins affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Iraq’s economic reforms, private sector development, and strengthening development pathways to achieve Iraq’s development goals.
