Baghdad: A parliamentary bloc is preparing a draft law to “enhance funding for Iraqi air defense systems”. The Sadiqun parliamentary bloc revealed that it has prepared a draft law for “Financing the Strengthening of Iraqi Air Defense Systems.” This law aims to provide the necessary financial allocations for the purchase, development, operation, and maintenance of modern air defense systems to protect Iraq’s airspace and enhance its sovereignty.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the new draft law, adopted by the bloc, includes allocating funds from the federal government’s cash reserves to finance the project, with the possibility of supplementing the funding from savings achieved in the operational and investment expenditures of ministries. It also grants the government the authority to open an additional appropriation for this purpose, in accordance with applicable laws.
The draft law also stipulates the formation of a specialized technical and security committee to oversee contracting with international companies specializing in air defense, giving priority to companies that offer the best technical specifications, training programs, and technology transfer.
Furthermore, the draft law includes parliamentary and financial oversight mechanisms, requiring periodic reports to the Security and Defense Committee of the Council of Representatives on the project’s implementation phases, timelines, and expenditures. The project will also be subject to oversight by the Federal Board of Supreme Audit.
