The Dutch Defense Minister Visits Hawija to Address 2015 Airstrike Impact

Hawija: Dutch Defense Minister Robin Brickellmann, along with Kirkuk Governor Ribwar Taha, Deputy Governor for Technical Affairs Dr. Ibrahim Tamim, and Dutch Ambassador to Iraq Janet Alberda, visited the Hawija district, located west of Kirkuk. During the visit, they met with local dignitaries and relatives of the victims at the Polytechnic College dean's office. The delegation also visited the site of the 2015 Dutch airstrike, accompanied by the Hawija mayor. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the airstrike on June 2, 2015, was carried out by Dutch aircraft and resulted in the deaths of at least 70 people. The bombing caused widespread damage throughout the district and targeted an explosives factory during the period when ISIS controlled Hawija. The Dutch government admitted at the time that civilians were mistakenly targeted in the attack.
