Trump Administration Plans Large-Scale Deportation of Afghan Migrants

Washington:The Trump administration is planning to deport over 150 Afghan migrants via Pakistan, as announced by the organization “AfghanEvac” and a coalition of military veterans and advocacy groups. This decision indicates one of the largest deportations of Afghan nationals by the U.S.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Shawn VanDiver, head of “AfghanEvac,” revealed that many of the deportees fled Afghanistan after the Taliban took control in 2021 and the subsequent withdrawal of U.S. forces. Some of those facing deportation are relatives of individuals who served alongside U.S. military forces.

The New York Times reported that these deportations will involve migrants currently detained in Louisiana, with the first flight potentially departing as early as Monday. The U.S. is utilizing Pakistan as a transit route for these deportations due to the absence of diplomatic relations with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

President Trump has justified his administration’s immigration policies as measures to enhance domestic security. However, human rights advocates criticize these actions as violations of due process and freedom of expression, contributing to an unsafe environment for minorities due to alleged racial profiling.

The Department of Homeland Security has refrained from confirming any future deportation operations, citing operational security concerns. Meanwhile, VanDiver has called on Congress to enact legislation that would provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Afghans living in the U.S. to prevent their deportation.

In recent developments, Pakistan has expelled over two million Afghan nationals back to Afghanistan since 2023.
