Baghdad: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, met today in Ankara to discuss bilateral relations and agree on the formation of a high-level coordination council between the two countries, in addition to discussing a number of issues of common interest.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the two ministers are expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the multifaceted efforts undertaken with Turkish support to achieve lasting stability and security in Syria. The sources stated that Fidan will emphasize the gradual development of Syria's capacity to combat terrorism and Turkey's determination to strengthen coordination with Syria in this area.

They added that Fidan will indicate that Turkey's goal is to further develop cooperation with Syria within an institutional framework. The sources further stated that the Turkish Foreign Minister will stress his country's rejection of Israel's policies and practices aimed at obstructing efforts to achieve stability in Syria.

According to the sources, Fidan and al-Shaibani are also expected to discuss Turkey's efforts in support of diplomatic endeavors aimed at reaching a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, reopening the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, and achieving lasting peace. The Syrian Foreign Minister arrived in Ankara this morning.
