Baghdad: Minister of Water Resources Muthanna al-Tamimi and the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Klemens Semtner, engaged in discussions on Tuesday to tackle the pressing challenges of water scarcity and the effects of climate change.
According to Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Ministry of Water Resources highlighted that Minister Muthanna al-Tamimi met with EU Ambassador Klemens Semtner and his delegation to explore ways to enhance joint cooperation and coordination. The discussions focused on advancing efforts in water resources management to address the growing issues of water scarcity and climate change's impact on Iraq.
During the meeting, both parties examined existing cooperation frameworks and discussed the potential for expansion, particularly in improving water resource management, rationalizing water use, and supporting modern irrigation initiatives. They also considered the benefits of leveraging European expertise in the water sector to bolster these efforts.
The statement further noted that both sides stressed the importance of implementing the partnership agreement between Iraq and the European Union in irrigation. The focus will be on future projects aimed at enhancing Iraq's ability to cope with water scarcity and supporting the Ministry's plans to modernize infrastructure, ultimately contributing to water security and sustainable development.
